Canberra International Airport is to be transformed in to one of Australia’s greenest airports thanks to a long-awaited $250million facelift. From July the airport will enjoy its biggest development in its 81 year history to create a facility that it twice the size of its current one. Key features of the new terminal, due for completion in 2012, including a doubling of check-in counters, a trebling of the baggage belt capacity and the installation of two new aerobridges. Car parking spaces will be increased to 2500 while the lounge capacity will quadruple to 6000sq m. And its green credentials will include a tri-generation plant that will help the airport to cut its carbon emissions by 75 per cent and a policy of recycling water and using recycled materials in its construction.
