The withdrawal of the Melbourne-Tokyo route by Qantas Group has seen Japan Airlines eyeing up Melbourne as a potential destination for their services. Japan Airlines plans to expand its charter business into North Queensland, Alice Springs and Darwin in the next financial year and will continue to monitor Melbourne as a possible future route. The airline has acknowledged that in today’s competitive market it is difficult to attract Japanese tourists, though they are tapping in to the expanding school tourist market.
