Checked baggage fees – a frustrating charge for frequent business travellers, after all it’s not always that practical to travel sans luggage. But as irritating as these extra charges are, we all tend to accept them as a fact of life. However, new research revealing just how much airlines are making from these fees, is likely to set PAs’ blood boiling. The report from IdeaWorks, US Airlines Will Generate Millions from Higher Baggage Fees, focused on five of the big US airlines – American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways, and estimates that the carriers will earn a baggage fee revenue of US$1.76billion. Each of the big five US airlines has recently increased their baggage charges – no doubt as they recognise this lucrative revenue stream. Do you encourage members of staff to travel with hand luggage to avoid charges, or is your company happy to pay the cost – let us know?
